jainas: (art)
I am late, and have no ideas for day 7 for now, so I'm skipping ahead to day 8. :)

Day 8
In your own space, post self-recs for at least three fanworks that you created. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I draw and write both in french (a lot over the years, in many fandom) and in English (much more recent...) So today I'm reccing 3 of each! (Differents from the ones I recced last year, of course.) :D

FANARTS )

FICS (in english) )

FICS (in french) )
jainas: (denial)
I'm late and catching up!

Day 6

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your wish-list if you feel comfortable doing so. Maybe someone will grant a wish. Check out other people's posts. Maybe you will grant a wish. If any wishes are granted, we'd love it if you link them to this post
.

1) Basic but always immensely appreciated: comments (not even 100% positive as long as they are constructive! As long as it's kindly meant I'm alright with all kind of feedback. My feather aren't easily ruffled and I know nothing is perfect and there’s always room for improvement ! ;) ).

On my fanfics :
In english : Hannibal, Naruto, Lastman, American Gods, Star Wars crossovers with les Mis or Hannibal.

On my art (the link goes to my old tumblr as it’s where most of the stuf still is).
I’m actually in the process of moving houses regarding my art-posting and so follows for my new accounts would also be greatly appreciated: on instagram, facebook or tumblr.

2) I’m suffering an embarassement of riches and my reading list is already pretty full, but anyway fics (or recs) for the following fandoms/themes would be welcome anyway:

- Hunter X Hunter: anything well written really, I love fics that manage to make clever use of the Nen, worldbuilding and Gon’s orange and blue morality. Pairing-wise I especially like Gon/Kirua, Kurapika/Leorio and Hisoka/anyone... and as the fandom is pretty dead I haven't seen many fics based on the current arcs, or the most recent worldbuiding... Trans!Kurapika is always welcome.

- I love pairings built around loyalty and/or with bdsm themes, service… as well as gets together and relationship negociations. Any good fic in the fandoms cited above that deals with those themes will probably be of interest to me! :)

3) I want kink-memes to come back!
And more specifically I was taking about it with a friend, and what I think would actually be great would be an interspecies kink-meme: cutural differences, xeno, monsterfucking… It’s all tropes I love, and 2019 had great examples in many fandoms (Venom, The shape of Water, Star Trek Discovery…)
I have no idea how well a multifandom kink-meme would actualy work, But it could be such fun…
But truly I would be on board for a kinkmeme in any of my fandoms. :D

Day 3

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc.) and explain why you love it so much. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I'm late mostly because I couldn't figure what fandom to talk about. Last year I did the fight scene at the beginning of Hannibal season 2...
And for this year I finally decided to talk about Hunter X Hunter by mangaka Yoshihiro Togashi, which has been my favorite manga ever since I was 13 years old and a friend of my little brother lent us a few books. (Said crafty little brother later got me the first tomes as a birthday present so I would buy the rest... which I did.) To this day I still buy faithfully every new tome when they come out in French, which is not that often. (This incredible hiatus x hiatus chart shows the rhythm of chapter publication over twenty years... 2018 has been the best year since 2010.... which is both a bit depressing and heartening I guess.)

One of the things that explain this enduring love for HxH is that it's actually not the basic shonen it seems to be: a young boy wanting to get stronger to find his father and going on a quest and finding friends along the way... Only Togashi doesn't go the obvious road and isn't interested in drawn-out tournaments or unchecked power-ups.... )

Day 4

Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've interacted with and friend/follow them. Afterwards, leave a comment in this post with the equivalent of "I did it!"

I often comment on fics so the first should be easy, but I'll try to do the second as well with someone I follow and have interacted a bit with, but never did the full introduction thing.
Don't hesitate to introduce yourself in the comments over here if you want to! \o/

Day 5

In your own space, promote three communities, challenges, blogs, pages, Twitters, Tumblrs or platforms and explain why you love them. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

On DW I love:
[community profile] fancake : a thematic multifandom reccing community that gave me some of my best reads those last years. It got me into reccing fic much more often as well, even if some themes are more my jam than other (I wanted the 'interspecies story' round to never end! ^^).

[community profile] drawesome : a traditional art community that I joined one year and half ago and where I found lovely peoples. They hold challenges every month. :)

[community profile] fictional_fans : is a place for multifandom fans to gather, ask questions or discuss. The idea is that many fandoms don't have the critical mass for a community to stay alive, while a multifandom community may.

I also spend a lot of time on a French writers discord, where we talk about all sorts of things not always related to writing. ^^

jainas: (bruce lit)

Day 2
Rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I love recommending fics and so I already wrote a post reccing my top 10-ish favorites fics read in 2018:
In french: les livres de Fred Vargas, Laputa (Ghibli), The good place, The musketeers, greek mythology, Trône de Fer
In english: Harry Potter, Les Misérables, Fairy tales, Hannibal, Hunter X Hunter, Supernatural, Batman, Black Panther, Lord of the Ring, Transformers

So here is a selection of a few of my last bookmarked fics, which happen to be mostly Yuletide fics. :)

Moonlight:
The seasons change, and so does Kevin's family.
A achingly lovely story about change told through Kevin's daughter point of view, that manage to capture some of that same wordless emotions the movie had, and the slow steps of acceptation. I loved seeing Chiron and Kevin through her eyes.

Temeraire:
Temeraire finds some fox eggs(?) and Laurence tries to determine why Tharkay is avoiding him.
I absolutely loved this story and it's subtlety at handling Laurence and Tharkey's relationship while wheaving some more thematic ideas through the plot.

Temeraire and Iskierka want to get Tharkeay a christmas present and go about it in a a very... draconic way.
Draconic (il)logics are at their finest in this story, which makes it absolutely hilarious and yet weirdly canon-compliant.

The Left Hand of Darkness
Therem survives crossing the border but spends some time detained in Orgoreyn. Genly gets him back.
I read The Left Hand of Darkness for the first time this year, and this story works as a fix-it because it doesn't actually try to fix everything but the most obvious point and really adresses the messy afterneath of trauma while still being a happy ending. I also enjoyed the interesting angle it took to adress the canonical ambiguity of Genly and Therem's relationship.

Venom
The first time Eddie suggests they have sex, Venom is, more than anything else, extremely confused.
A lovely fic full of cultural differences and relationship negotiations.

Eddie’s pulse is racing, like it was when Venom first saw ‘her.’ Anne. The ‘her’ they like. The ‘her’ they protect. She is not with them now, but Eddie’s heart still runs.

Eddie doesn't like Christmas, but Venom really likes celebrating things.
A perfect anti-christmas story. :)

The Good Place
What happens when Tahani does, in fact, take Eleanor up on her offer to stay with her in her Sydney motel room.
An excellent fork-in-the-road AU, both sweet, solid plot-wise, a bit tropey in the best way and very in character with both Tahani and Eleanor's flaws, but also their evolutions. Also funny, and hot, sometimes at the same time. :)

In which Janet assigns herself (status=happy).
A lovely character-study on Janet and her evolution, with a strong narration voice.

Uprooted
An extended epilogue after Sarkan returns to the valley.
A lovely and very satisfying epilogue!

What We do In the Shadows
Vladislav goes viral. The Beast is not impressed.
In which Vlad discover the power of self-actualisation through internet feedback. A very fun story!

jainas: (play naked)
I have spent the whole week holed-up at my mum's and doing almost nothing, it was absolutely great and I needed that. :)

I still have a few new-year fannish recaps to make, my to-read yuletide list is still 70+ tabs long and I leaving tomorrow, but in the meantime I'm participating to [community profile] snowflake_challenge . I did it for the first time las year and enjoyed it a lot, and met lovely new peoples this way.

Day 1
In your own space, talk about your Happy Place—the things that give you joy, calms you or keeps you sane. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I need some creative endeavour in my life to stay happy. Those last years it mostly was writting fanfictions, but I got back into drawing with a vengeance during inktober 2017, managed to keep making stuff all through 2018 and have been insanely productive since october. (And I'm still writting too).
Lets hope it last, but if it doesn't I also always can retreat into books... or fanfic reading :D

jainas: (Default)
Day 13:
In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I like [personal profile] mekare goals:

Have fun, be kind.

So, in this spirit my goal are going to be just that: goals to strive for, but I won't beat myself if I don't do it. (Also, I probably should keep in mind while setting them that there are two huge game-changing personnal goals set up for this year, and if they come to fruition a lot of things will change and my free time will probably go up in flames...)

That said, in 2018 I'd like to:

- product at least one fanwork (fanfic of fanart) per month
- write at least oe fem-slash fic (for [personal profile] flo_nelja 's fem-slash challenge, go check it out!)
- write at least one fanfic in english
- finish at least two WIPs
- write at least three fics with women as main characters outside drabbles
- read a book per month, romance excluded
- keep reccing the fics I loved and try leavig more comments
- socialise more, if possible... I'm not quite sure how to go about this one: tumblr's chat is useful, but i'd rather spend the less time possible on this site... so it leaves comment more on Ao3/LJ/DW and... I don't know? I'll try to figure it out

Day 14

In your own space, create your own challenge. Whatever your challenge is, and have fun with it! Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Ho, I know:
Always take the time to comment on fanworks I read or watched that have less than 3 comments.
Commenting on everything seems unrealistic, but this I can do, I think. :)

Day 15 coming later. :D

jainas: (concise writer)
I'm a few days late! The challenge led me to comment and review much more than I usualy do, my "to read" list increased tenfold and I'm way behind many things I meant to do, but here we go! ^^

Day 10
In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme. (Or a few!) Tell us what makes it work for you, and why it appeals to you so much. Talk about what you like to see in fanworks featuring that theme most. Feel free to include recs and examples! Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I have a weakness for get-together/first time fics... I can't really ship if I can't see how they would get together in the first place, how they would manage to fit... and it's often a moment of tensions (sexual, or emotional, or both), of inner resistance, of changes and consequences, not only for the characters themselves, but also in relation to the 'verse around them...
It's get-together fics between Naruto and Sasuke that got me into slash, and for now I have never written a shipping fic without writing the get-together first... (which sometimes leads me to writing long-ass fics I can't finish, I'm sorry... ^^)
And clearly, if the get-together is well written, then you can get me into any pairing you want :D

A few recs, more or less randomly taken from my favourites:
- A Deeper Season (Vorkosiagan Saga) by Sahiya and Lightgetsin - Miles/Gregor - 117 605 words <3
- As Good as a Boy (Famous Five) by KannaOphelia - George/jo - 8940 words
- Manifestations of Regret (Naruto) by forgetme - Gai/Kakashi - 16 923 words
- Ephesus (Classical Greece and Rome History RPF) by dirtybinary - Scipio Africanus/Hannibal Barca - 7 161 words

Rec me! What are your favorites get together/first time fics? Tell me what is the one for your OTP, or the one that made you ship anew!

Day 11

Share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Star Wars, surely, in a very litteral way: I wouldn't be with my boyfriend of 12 years, whom I met on satrwars-universe.com, and I wouldn't live where I live now... I wouldn't have some of the same friends, and my experience of fandom would be quite different as it was my first real fandom, and one I spent a long time in, where I wrote almost 100 pages of unpublished fanfic, started to read in english and started t be fluent, had my first ships, my first meeting of online peoples...
I may not be in the fandom anymore, but without Star Wars there would be so many changes in my life, I can't really map them all! :)

Day 12

In your own space, create a fanwork. Make a podfic, an icon, a sketch, a meta, or a rec list. Arts and crafts. Cross stitch. Draft an essay about a particular medium. Put together a picspam or a fanmix. Write a review of book you love, a ship manifesto, a you-should-be-listening-to-this-band essay. Create something. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I'm a bit short on time... (she write, before writing 1600 words in one afternoon and spending way too much time calculating the number of days it would take to a small, fast-moving party to ride from King's Landing to Winterfell...) So let's try one of the prompt I got in the UST meme (in french, sorry, but it's still open if you want to) and the written kitten writing website I saw recced on one of the previous days:

Le chemin de l'honneur - Jaime & Brienne - 1600 mots )

No time for day 13 tonight... later!
jainas: (concise writer)
Day 8
In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Ho, what to choose! There are plenty of fandom that gave me a lot of feelings and I have been known to occasionally shout "Holy sh**t" out loud while reading or watching... But my last huge crush that translated into fannish activity for a fandom was Hannibal, and I could talk a long while about color choices, and subbtles cues or heavy symbolism... But a "Holy sh**t" moment was certainly the opening scene of season 2: Jack attacking Hannibal in the kitchen...

I love this scene for a lot of reasons: the sudden explosion of violence after a slow, contemplative start... It is the first time we get to see the unleashed, physically savage part of Hannibal, but also the first time we really see him get hurt, and it has a small taste of "you deserved it" after what he put Will through (and where the season 1 left us)... And of course the cliffhanger, and the fact that the scene is actually a flash forward so we have to wait the whole season to see how they got there and how it ends...
And the way it ties in with the last episode of the season is perfect for me: same scene, but with a lot more layers and much more to it as a whole... and the ways things evolved wasn't a let down after the build up, it was actually even better...
I was already pretty hooked, but I thing this is the scene that really made me fall il love with this show.

Day 9
In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator.

I draw, and write both in french (a lot over the years, in many fandom) and in English (I have exactly 4 pieces translated)... So today I'm reccing 3 of each! :D

FANARTS )

“In your own space, create a love meme for yourself. Let people tell you how amazing and awesome and loveable you really are. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so. Surf the comments and find people to give love to.”

Wow, this one is really hard for me, I almost skipped today. I don't know if I'm more embarrassed by the idea of "asking for it", or the prospect of almost no one answering, or the idea that anyway people online get a reducted and curated version of myself, so any answer would be somehow unreliable...  I like plenty of things about the people I know online, and there are probably things to like about me but I don't bond that easily, so "love" somehow feels a very strong word.... I'd rather have a like meme if you don't mind!
But well: here we go. ^^

jainas: (bruce lit)
“I create for myself. I don’t need to have people to read/see/listen/appreciate it.” --said no Fan Creator ever.

Okay, maybe the first part. A lot of people create fanworks for themselves because it’s an idea they NEED to see through in a story, art or musical interpretation. But, I know of NO ONE who puts their work out there for the world to see and doesn’t want to have any feedback on it. Nothing more lonely then to contribute the only way you know how to a fandom and have nothing but crickets accompany it.

Day 6

Leave feedback for a fanwork. Or multiple fanworks. It can be as simple as I liked this to a detailed list of all the things you loved about the fanwork. The key is to leave some sort of feedback.

If you've already left feedback in the course of a previous challenge, it totally counts. But you're free to leave more feedback.

Afterwards, leave a comment in this post with the equivalent of "I did it!" If you feel so inclined, leave a link to the fanwork you left feedback for so others can check it out.

I feel like I have been pretty good at commenting since the beginning of yuletide... But it could be nice to document that!
So I'll put a link here for every comment I leave on a fanwork until the end of Snowflake. Do not hesitate to check back on this post as the list will certainly grow!

FANFICS

- Star Wars: The Last Jedi: Space by SidleyParkHermit - A Leia ficlet post TLJ, both bitter and hopeful. <3
- Star Wars: Determined nominativism by Petra - A drabble about how Obi-Wan became Ben.
- Life on Mars: Game Theory by Petra - Gene Hunt/Sam Tyler and masochism. Incredibly hot an fucked-up, in all the senses. :)

FANART

- Star Trek Discovery: Jason Isaacs - Lorcas tribble by Larkistin89
- Captain America: Bucky Barne: Release by Dorkbait

jainas: (denial)
Create a fannish wishlist. No limits on size or type of fanwork; just tell us what you’d like to see. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so. And if you grant a wish, do the same thing!

1) Basic but always immensely appreciated: comments (not even 100% positive as long as they are constructive! ;) ) on my fanfics or my art.

2) A beta reader for my few fics in english (an American gods short-fic and two star Wars fusion: one with Hannibal, the other with les Mis.). I am sure I have room for improvement!

3) Fics (or recs) for the following fandoms:

- Hunter X Hunter: anything well written really, I love fics that manage to make clever use of the Nen. Gen is very welcome of course, and pairing-wise I especially like Gon/Kirua, Kurapika/Leorio and Isoka/anyone... and as the fandom is pretty dead I haven't seen many fics based on the current arcs, or the most recent worldbuiding... Trans!Kurapika is always welcome.

- Sweet/vicious: anything goes as well, but what I would really really love is a Jules/Ophelia fic with a satisfying end for the Harris romance (I strongly feel that a long term relationship between him and Jules is unsustainable given all the lying... and the murder) and a sensitive examination of all the issues left. I also love all the secondary characters!

- DCU: Batman/Superman. Bonus if there is kryptonite involved

Recommend a fannish or creative resource.

This year [community profile] drawesome has been invaluable, full of lovely people, cheering and links toward drawing tutorials and many other resources... And it's a good motivation. If you draw even a little consider joining, it could give you a boost!

jainas: (bruce lit)
Post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create.

I try to post recs regularly on [community profile] fancake, and last month I did a recap of my 10+ favorite fics of the year (the rec itself and a few of the fics are in french, but most works are in english), so this time I will recommend fanworks I haven't reced before... (But no Yuletide fics, as I plan to do a rec post once I'm done with my still growing "to read" list! ^^)

Hannibal
With One Hand (and with the Other) (7095 words) by
An unexpected encounter between a victim and a murderer. A study of how Will is totally changed, yet exactly the same.
A fascinating encounter with Will, post-show. The choice of outsider point of view is very interesting and very well done. Excellent fic from an excellent writer.

Pi's Lullaby (62505 words)by
Will loses his daughter at the mall. Hannibal returns her to him.
A recently finished long-fic I enjoyed a lot as a WIP. T_pock managed the feat to write an Hannibal kid!fic that feels very true to all the characters. The kid is wonderfully written, and Hannibal's point of view is a gem.

Brooklyn Nine Nine
An Ever-Fixed Mark (4165 words) by
Ray and Kevin renew their vows.

What can I say? Captain Holt is my favorite, and this fic is my favourite too. :D It feels like it could be from an episode of the show.

Star Wars: TLJ
Call and Response (1115 words) by
Rebellions are built on hope.
The perfect post-The Last Jedi fic. People answer the call. The spark lights a fire.

Transformers
And I Alone Have Escaped To Tell You (58,202 words) by
“This is like some kinda bad dream,” Ironhide said aloud.
“No,” Cyclonus said, low and harsh. “But it will be.”

Astolat hardly need any more shout-out to find new readers, but this fic (or any of the followings in the same fandom really) could easily have been on my Fav fic list of the year and was put aside in favor of less well known writers. The thing is, before reading this fic I knew nothing of Transformers past the "giant robots turning into smaller... things ? vehicles?" part. I didn't even knew what were the Autobot or Decepticons.
Did it stop me from reading a 60k fic about all those things (and more)? You bet it didn't. And neither did it stop me from enjoying myself tremendously! :D
Astolat is one of the few writers I'd follow into whatever fandom she would write and never regret it, because she has a genius for pulling you  into a flow of action and her plotting is great and she can make you feel feelings about giants over-competent robots loyalties you didn't care about 10 000 words ago. So... go read this fic is what I'm saying, I guess. I'm pretty sure you won't regret it.
jainas: (Default)
A bit randomly I decided to do the Snowflake challenge! And in english, too!

Day 1

Talk about why you're participating in Snowflake and, if you’ve participated in the past, how the challenge has affected you. What drew you to it? What did you take away from it? What do you hope to accomplish this year?

This is my first time doing it, but I have been aware of it existence for a few years and I often was interested reading what other people shared!
I saw  the challenge in a few friends feeds this morning and thought, why not? I should have time to do it and I'm vaguely depressed by the prospect of going back to work tomorrow, so it might cheer me up! I don't really expect anything, mainly I'm just curious I think...
We will see how it goes!

Day 2

Share a favorite memory about fandom: the first time you got into fandom, the last time a fanwork touched your heart, crazy times with fellow fans (whether on-line or off-line), a lovely comment you’ve received or have left for someone.

I got in fandom a long time ago (in a galaxy far far away)... I was mono-fandom for a long time (Star Wars, then Naruto...) and them very much multi-fandom ever since. A few of my more solid friends IRL are actually people I met through Star Wars (including my boyfriend of 12 years) or Naruto.

2017 had a few fannish good memories, most more linked to fanworks and people than actual fandoms:

- This year I got to meet [personal profile] malurette IRL as we watched an outdoor viewing of the show Lastman. It was great and it became one of my insta-fav fandoms this year! I got the boxed blue-ray for my boyfriend at Christmas and we are actually rewatching it. Good times!

- [personal profile] maldoror_chant  came back online, started writing again... and archiving all her fanfics on AO3, which made me very happy and relieved. I am having a blast reading all her old fics along as she archive them and discovering new stuff. (I also had a few flashback of being 20-something and staying up literally all night reading The Arrangement on the family computer... and maybe even skipping a class a few year latter (which I usually never did!) as I was caught in a reread... :D)

- Thanks to my amazing boyfriend I got to meet a favorite author of mine this year: Guy Gavriel Kay, who was in Paris for a book tour... On the day of his birthday. I'm not usually keen on meeting people whose work I enjoy a lot IRL, But somehow this was a bit special and I built it up more for myself by using one of my inktober days to do an illustration for one of his books... which I gave him in person when I met him! And after that we had the chance to join him and a few other lovely people for restaurant after the book signing was done and we got to talk more. It was altogether one of the loveliest evening I had all year. And we exchanged a few emails since then, so... Yeah. Good memory. :)
