WIP list

Feb. 6th, 2019 01:46 pm
jainas: (concise writer)
I used [personal profile] melannen 's super useful sorting algorithm to work out which WIP I should focus on first, based on a totally subjectif mix of how interested I am in writting them at the time, and how close they are from actually finished.

1. Batman Lignes de failles : 21.5
2. Dresden Files Laffaire Lady Marcone : 21
3. trad ST Tribble : 21
4. Venom Sextoys : 20.5
5. Hannibal Suite Ukrainienne : 13
6. Batman Double trouble : 12.5
7. Batman Trending GothamCapes : 11.5
8. Bat/Sup Kryptonite kink : 11.5
9. Hannibal Talion : 9.5
10. Naruto Sasu/Naru : 5.5
11. Sherlock Les bbs nageurs : 3.5
12. Batman Oleum et Operam chapitre 11 : 3
13. Batman Avalanche : 2

Some comments:
- Avalanche is so low only because Lignes de Failles stole all its sub!Bruce thunder. :D
- I only started translating the tribble story yesterday after mailing [personal profile] sunlit_stone that I had a vague idea of doing it, but I'm already halfway through. :)
- I really need to start working on the Venom plot-bunny
- The Dresden File fic is still far from done, so even if I keep focused on it, I know I'll work on many other fics on the side before it's done.
- I really love my Calvin icon. :D

A glimpse of my (many) submissions for the Ravage Anthology with @lovecrimebooks. I was maybe a tad over productive? :D ^^
They are only submission and may not all be in the anthology… but I had tremendous fun working on this project and digging at the theme, with such wonderfull artists and writters. Hannibal fandom is really the best. I can’t wait to see the book.

I have been reading [personal profile] beatrice_otter 's Yuletide season primer, and it occured to me for the first time that maybe I could actually participate this year! I have been writting more in english, and with a good beta it could be totally doable.

I'm not sure if I will go for it, but just in case I nominated  three small fandoms I could totally see myself writting for: Lastman (anime), Sweet/Vicious and Hunger Makes the Wolf, a wonderful SF duology with action, queer characters, witchiness and workers uniting to overthrow an evil mega-corporation... that actually has zero fic for it as far as I can tell.

What's up?

- There is a very cool discussion about characterization going on [community profile] fictional_fans about the 3-points that we consider the core of a character - the defining traits, without which the character isn’t the character anymore.
It’s obviously very personal and there is no “right” answer, but I tried my hand at Hannibal and John Reese in the comments.

- I now have a Pillowfort account (thanks Berylia) under my usual handle. My fannish experience is already a bit too fragmented for my liking these days, so I'm not sure if I want to add a new plateform to it, but we will see if I choose to stick with it in the end or not. Fo now DW is still very much my favourite place to hang out, even if Discord has proven interesting.

- I have submited my Ravage Anthology pieces (three of them! I was on fire). And even if I plan to maybe make a few minor modifications on one of the drawings if it's not too late, I now can't quite manage the motivation for anything else even if I want to write or draw in theory. I am doing the Murder Husbands Big bang as an artist but am waiting from feedback from my writer and in the meantime I'm just poking at things and achieving nothing either fannishly or irl, it's a bit frustrating.

- I'm both looking forward and dreading Inktober a bit. The 31 day run was a bit exhausting last year, but very rewarding too. I haven't yet decided how I'll play it: follow the prompts? (I don't find them very insipiring for now), choose a theme? do a full quotetober like last year? For now the options are open.

- The good and proper place (The Good Place, Elehonor/Tahani),

There is a thread on [community profile] fictional_fans full of multifandom longfics recs and it has been a delight. Don't hesitate to jump-in if you want to share!
My "to read later" list has gone through some serious growth!

I recced a few dozen of my personal favorites, not for the first time, in some cases...
I had most likely already talked about them here or over at [community profile] fancake ... but I can't help it, I love reccing fics I loved so other people can enjoy them too.
But it is also an exercice in frustration, I keep thinking of other fics I want to add to the list; some fandoms are under-represented... and of course in this case it is only fics in english.

Also, I find endlesly strange that some of my favourites fics are in fandoms I know almost nothing about... I guess it's because I loose the "canon" analysis and just enjoy the story, let myself be pulled in... And maybe because things that aren't original for  a reader knowing about the fandom are new to me?

Top-of-Mind 5 favorites longfics I have already reread at least once and would reread again anyday:
(I was strong and picked only single fics, and not series)

- Freeport by Maldoror_Chant (Gundam Wing, but could pretty much work as an original)
Freeport colony: a notorious den of pirates, smugglers and thieves. Wufei persuades one of its denizens, his one-time ally Duo, to help him catch a killer hiding there. Agent Chang thinks he knows what to expect from this case, from Freeport and from Duo Maxwell. He couldn't be more wrong.
A masterpiece of worldbuilding and gripping plot. A must-read.

- A Deeper Season by lightgetsin & sahiya (Vorkosigan saga)
Take one Miles, a hapless cousin, Cetagandan social politics, a galactic conspiracy, a scientific discovery, a lot of firepower, and an unexpected declaration. Mix well and step back quickly.

- Diplomatic Relations by Maldoror_Chant (Naruto)
Rock Lee, Diplomatic Envoy to Sunagakure. There are so many ways that could go wrong. But Lee is determined to succeed! And to befriend the feared Kazekage too, while he's at it. Good thing Lee loves a challenge...

- Victory Condition by astolat (Transformers)
“Do you want me to tell you a story?” Megatron said mockingly. “You won’t like it, Prime. It’s not a very nice one.”
The most recent of the list, but it climbed to the top like wahou, and for a fandom I knew nothing about!

- Don't You Shake Alone by Dira Sudis (Generation Kill)
Nate looked exactly like Brad always pictured him: exhausted in the full life-in-a-combat-zone sense of the word.

2nd round of fav longfics:

Anarchy in the UK by Yatzee (X-men AU)
Royalty AU wherein Charles is the Prince of Wales... and gay.
Made me love it to pieces even when I have absolutely no interest in royalty.

4 Minute Window by Speranza (MCU)
"Look, if they catch me," Bucky muttered, "they're either going to kill me or they're going to put me in a box with a little window and—Steve, I can't."

Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose by synecdochic (SGA)
Because the meaning of life is "do the next thing", and we all carry the seeds of the past into our future. Futurefic, Rodney-centric.
I read this fic when I knew almost nothing of the fandom, and it stayed with me for a long time.

J'attendrai by Quasar (Rivers of London)
Probationary Constable Peter Grant met me for the first time when I walked up to him by the portico of the Actors' Church on a freezing winter night and said, "Hello. What are you up to?" However, I first met Detective Sergeant Peter Grant when he jogged up to my doorstep on a mild autumn afternoon and said, "There you are, sir. It is you, isn't."
Another case of "fandom osmosis level of knowledge is enough to get you by and won't stop you from loving this fic".

The Habits of a Lifetime by out_there (Sherlock)
In which Mycroft is not an easy man to know and an even harder one to look after. Fortunately, Lestrade is diligent and determined, and knows how to pay attention to people. Where family comes with obligations, but it also cares, even when you don't want them around. Where life mostly goes as expected, but sometimes has unanticipated joys.
The perfect post season 4 fic that made it all better and joined my headcanon on the spot.

Bel Canto by bendingsignpost (Sherlock AU)
After years of waiting for wealthy patrons to faint, Dr John Watson discovers a far more interesting patient in the opera house basement. (AU through a Phantom of the Opera lens.)
<3

Cinderwings by bendingsignpost (Supernatural AU)
Under the cover of a masquerade ball, Castiel has five nights to recover the key to his people's freedom. (Destiel Cinderella AU)
<3 <3 as well

To the sky without wings by leupagus (Star Wars TFA)
Poe dreams of a blue-green tree.
Just... so good? I didn't even knew I could ship Poe/Luke

Morphology by Finely Honed (Hannibal AU)
Hannibal's fascination with Will prompts him to attempt the impossible—giving up killing in order to better explore the possibility of a relationship with Will. Easier said than done.
Wonderful writing, strong plot and psychological insight.

Shark Tank by xzombiexkittenx (Hannibal AU)
Will and Hannibal meet in prison. Hannibal is still the Ripper, Will is still a profiler who had encephalitis. Only now they're cell mates
Slightly worrying summary, but excellent fic. :D

Pi's Lullaby by t_pock (Hannibal AU)
Will loses his daughter at the mall. Hannibal returns her to him.
<3

Where All Ladders Start by emungere (Hannibal)
Will is slowly losing his mind in the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane. He makes a deal with the devil to get out.
Classic, but for a reason :D

I cheated: fics that are over 300k, or actually series rather than single fics

- The Arrangement by Maldoror_Chant (Gundam Wing)
Wufei, struggling with his demons, agrees to a wartime fling with Heero, no affection needed or wanted. But the 'arrangement' lasts and grows as they join the preventers. It could become a source of strength for both. If they let it.

The Paradox Series by wordstrings (Sherlock)
Being with Sherlock is a series of shocks, but John is game for it anyhow.
Not a longfic but a series, one of my favorite works in this fandom.

In This Light by SigilBroken (Game of Thrones)
"Allow Ser Jaime trial by combat,” Brienne said. “I will be his champion.”
A tremendously good Jaime/Brienne endgame serie. The one to read if you must only read one.

The same goes for Obscur-Echange fics, that got all their comments on LJ and none when I posted them on AO3.

No AO3 comment fics )

We had a debate the other day on a discord, where some authors didn't like kudos because they meant nothing in term of feedback, and were deemed "lazy"... And I disagree!
Sure, I'd rather have long gushing comments (or even comments pointing out mistakes or disagreements in a constructive way, I'm pretty thick skinned and open to criticism), but kudos are way better that nothing, they tell me " I read that fic and enjoyed it" even if the reader doesn't have anything more to tell, it's a proof of enjoyment that always make my day better when I get the daily AO3 email. (These day it's pretty much daily, Diary of a Ninken is raking up kudos at a rate I had never known before... but even the out-of-nowhere kudo on a old fic makes me happy. :) )

As a reader, I don't always comment on fics even if I try to do better, but I do leave a lot of kudos. I make a point to always kudo fics I enjoyed, and I often bookmark fics I really liked in the frame of mind that this way: a) I can find them again in order to rec them, b) their "rating" will go up and other people can find them. (I increasingly use the AO3 bookmarks to find fics I want to read, and it's made much easier by the new filtering system that for example lets you exclude thinks like "modern AUs" tags.... or on the other hand allows you to select only fics other users have tagged as "fav". <3

What is strange to me is the difference of kudo rates between languages and fandoms... Why are english-speaking Naruto fans more likely to leave kudos than french fannibals? I don't know! (As for the language difference I don't have a translated fic to do a a "scientific method" data analysis, but it certainly seems like a trend... and for the fandom part I'm assuming my Hannibal fics are as good as my Naruto fic. ^^)
jainas: (DN really)
I just listened to the excellent two first episodes of Be The Serpent, a fanish podcast of “extremely deep literary merit” (^^) which I found very interesting.

The first episode discusses Those who walk Away from Omelas by Ursula Le Guin, and the conversation the fic Victory Condition by Astolat has with it, but also how it is linked to genres such Hopepunk, Grimdark, and Noblebright. Excellents analysis, I found if really insightful and interesting, they pointed out stuff I hadn't considered both in Le Guin and Astolat works, and they managed to make me love Victory Condition even more, which I didn’t think was possible.

The second episode is about characters taxionomy, daemons, Hoghart houses, the Sorting Hat Chats... I never had much interest for the sorting system, but they introduced me to the concept of primary/ secondary houses, burned houses, and had interesting points on how personality classification systems can be a fun and useful writing tool.

So, I have been selected to take part in Ravage, a Hannibal fanbook in the line of the beautiful and amazing Raw and Radiance
Ravage will be centered around the circles of Dante’s Hell, and I will be making art (and maybe writting fic) for the Fraud and Rudeness sinners’ Circle… A good fit to Hannibal indeed. ;)
I’m very excited and very intimidated too… And also already ploting my next visit to Orsay Musem for *research purposes* :D :D

So it will be two fanzine this year, against zero fanzine the 30 previous years. It's never to late! :D

Go me! \o/
jainas: (jira)

So, I have written my Kakashi/Gai story for the fanzine… in less than one week! :D :D
(Are you impressed? Because I’m very impressed with myself.^^)
It is a hundred words over the 3000 words limit, and it needs a good reread before I send it in SPAG beta, but it is technically done! :D
For now it is tentatively called “Diary Of A Ninken” (it is from Pakkun's point of view), but I think it is a bit dull as a title and I'll try to find something a bit funnier. :)

Writing this story made me fall in love with this pairing all over again... and also check out a number of Natuto wikis for timeline details: I have now decided I'm never ever going to bother finishing the show, and this line is part of the fic: "By the fifth occurrence of resurrection, Pakkun decides he is getting too old for this shit."
So, you know...

Also I'm having a lot of feelings about ninja's summons: what exactly are they? What do they do when they are not being summoned? Where do they live?? Why are they loyal to a village?
So many questions... ^^
